Question by S@ruh: I have a question about cooking at a restaurant?
I am planning on going to Le Cordon Bleu because I love to cook. However, it’s very expensive and I’m going to have to get a loan. I just graduated High School this year. So before I have my parents pay a crapload of cash for Culinary school I want to know what it’s like to work in an actual restaurant kitchen. Is it even possible for me to get a job as a line cook at my age (17) with no restaurant experience? And if so, how do I go about doing this?

Maybe get some experience before you go to college, hard work and unrewarding, poor money bad hours.
don’t fall in love with it before you try it. It’s a hard road to the top and many many fall by ther wayside!

You can likely be a line cook at a chain like Chilis or Applebees. You have to work your way up, same as every occupation.

At 17 with no restaurant experience at all, you most likely will not start out as a line cook but as dish washer. Culinary arts takes a great deal of creativity. If you think you have this then you may very well excel at it. If you are serious, you should first think about the culinary scene in your home town. Is it thriving? Are there plenty of job opportunity’s? If not, are you willing to relocate? Because note that with a culinary degree, you will not want to be a lowly line cook, but a sous chef, and eventually an executive chef, whose salaries can range from 22,000-67,000 a year. These positions are usually only available at the finest restaurants and hotels and not just some random mom and pop restaurant. As for the atmosphere and working in a restaurant, the hours are long and varied. Be prepared to work most weekends. Its a very quick-paced occupation and takes a great deal of energy.
