Kitchen equipment question, why is it called a “spider”?

Question by calgarychef26: Kitchen equipment question, why is it called a “spider”?

Any other explanation besides the spider web one? Just curious if there is more to the name or not, thanks.

It kinda resembles a spider web… used to remove food from a deep fryer.

  1. There is a type of cast iron skillet that’s called a spider because it has legs. The original spider, which you can only find in antiques shops now, had three long legs because you cooked with it over a fire. You can buy spiders still, but the legs are much shorter, and they’re meant to be used on a gas stove.
